The car then swerved into oncoming traffic, nearly hitting a vehicle going south. The driver made a frantic left turn onto NW Whitman Street. Officer Stalnaker decided to pull her over near the Adam & Eve store. When Officer Stalnaker approached, she found the driver was a woman named Karrie. As they talked, the officer picked up the smell of alcohol and noticed signs of impairment. Karrie said she was on her way to a friend’s birthday party after coming all the way from Spokane. She admitted she had drunk alcohol earlier that evening before driving. Suspecting she was drunk, Officer Stalnaker asked Karrie to do some field sobriety tests. After some hesitation, she agreed. The officer started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During this test, Karrie showed a lack of smooth eye movements, rapid jerking at maximum gaze, and her nystagmus started before 45 degrees. Next was the Walk and Turn test. Karrie struggled to touch her heel-to-toe and made improper turns, taking too many or too few steps. The last test was the One Leg Stand. She failed to lift her foot correctly, didn’t count aloud, and used her arms to balance. Because of her reckless driving, her admission to drinking, and her poor performance on the tests, Officer Stalnaker arrested Karrie for DUI. She was handcuffed and taken to the Pullman Police Department for processing. There, Karrie agreed to give breath samples. Her readings ranged from 0.066 to 0.069. Despite this, the officer still believed she was under the influence due to her medication use and other signs. Karrie was later fingerprinted and photographed after spending time in a cell. She faced charges for DUI under RCW 46.61.502. Officer Stalnaker returned her belongings, told her about the charges, and released her to wait for her court date in Colfax, scheduled for November 4, 2024, at 3:00 PM.
