In July 2024, Marana Police responded to a tragic call after a 2-year-old girl named Parker was found unresponsive inside a vehicle during extreme Arizona heat. Paramedics rushed her to a Tucson hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Detectives began investigating what initially appeared to be a devastating accident. Bodycam footage shows Parker’s father, 37-year-old Christopher Ryan Scholtes, visibly distraught as he told officers he had left the vehicle running with the air conditioning on while his daughter slept. He claimed he lost track of time and believed she had gone inside the house. However, surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses contradicted key parts of his account, raising serious concerns for investigators. Scholtes was later arrested and charged in connection with Parker’s death. In November 2025, just one day before he was scheduled to surrender to custody ahead of sentencing, authorities confirmed Scholtes died by suicide. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner ruled his death a carbon monoxide poisoning.
