A 20-year-old man who was allegedly armed was in the hospital Saturday after being shot by Santa Ana police during a Friday evening traffic stop. The man was stopped in a vehicle at the 500 block of S. Rosewood Avenue shortly before 7 p.m., according to a police statement. “During the traffic stop, officers encountered a subject armed with a handgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the department said. The driver was shot in his lower and upper torso. It was not clear whether he had reached for a weapon or fired at officers. Nor was it clear if a firearm recovered from the vehicle belonged to the driver or his 30-year-old male passenger, according to Santa Ana Police spokesperson Sgt. Maria Lopez. The passenger was arrested and booked into jail on weapons violations charges, Lopez said. Neither the passenger nor the officers were injured, according to the statement. The investigation is ongoing. Santa Ana Police shootings are investigated by homicide detectives, the department’s internal affairs division and investigators from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
