United flight 2057 was landing in Tampa just after midnight when the crew called ahead. A passenger had slapped another passenger mid-flight, and nobody could tell police who was involved. Officers met the plane at Airside A. A party of three came off voluntarily and was escorted to the gate seating area. According to a passenger who witnessed it, she had been agitated since before the flight left San Francisco — shaking, kicking the seat in front of her. Then she stood up, turned, and slapped the person next to her hard across the face. That person was her own parent, and they were 65 or older. Under Florida statute 784.08, battery on a person 65 years of age or older is a felony regardless of how hard the blow lands or whether anyone is injured. She told officers she had realized during the flight that her parent had forgotten their medications, that she became frustrated and overwhelmed, and that she had never done anything like it before. She admitted striking them — in her words, not hard. When officers spoke to the person she hit, they said nothing had happened. Only after being told there was a witness did they admit being struck. They declined medical attention and refused to provide a written statement. She was arrested and transported to Orient Road jail. The booking was classified as domestic violence.
