On July 13, 2025, Las Cruces Police Officer Dutton conducted a traffic stop on a Hummer H3, which had suspended registration. The vehicle was being driven by a 26-year-old woman. The Hummer's windshield was extensively cracked, making visibility extremely limited. Officer Dutton asked the woman to step out of the vehicle and suspecting that she might be under the influence, he asked her to perform standardized field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the tests, she was placed under arrest for Driving While Under the Influence (DWI). She demanded to speak to a supervisor, so Sgt. Salinas was called. Sgt. Salinas spoke with the woman for an extensive length of time, but nothing changed her situation. She was taken to the Las Cruces Police Station, where she submitted to a breath test and the result was 0.000%. During a search, a small amount of a controlled substance was located on her person. A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was called and determined that the woman was under the influence of a controlled substance. She was charged with (1) DWI; (2) Felony possession of a controlled substance; and (3) resisting or obstructing an officer. On October 14, 2025, she was indicted by a grand jury. Her case is still open. Her next court date is March 30, 2026. All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
