On September 3rd, 2023, Ohio officers respond to a frantic 911 call reporting that George Applebee has allegedly cut his girlfriend’s throat and is dragging her back inside their home with a knife held to her neck. Officers arrive to screams coming from behind a locked door and learn the victim is being held in a back bedroom. Police issue repeated commands and attempt negotiation, but the suspect refuses to surrender. As officers force entry using tools, the situation rapidly deteriorates. When the door finally opens, officers observe the woman bleeding, with a knife pressed directly against her throat. With no clear opportunity to safely disarm the suspect and an active hostage assault unfolding, an officer fires his weapon, stopping the threat.
