Jones County Sheriff's Office has released videos of the morning a deputy was shot while conducting a traffic stop. The Sheriff's Office says Deputy John Kile was involved in the shooting early Sunday morning. After reviewing all the video evidence and discussing the case with District Attorney T. Wright Barksdale, the Sheriff's Office has released both Deputy Kile's dashcam and bodycam footage along with other deputys' cameras that responded as well. Deputy Kile was attempting to conduct the traffic stop on Highway 11 between Wayside and Round Oak. You can see in the footage that the driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Zachary Lucas Olivar of Snellville, did eventually stop and put his hands outside of the vehicle as the deputy prompted him. Deputy Kile approaches the vehicle and asks Olivar to step out of the car stating that Olivar was driving above the speed limit and that he was "weaving all over the road." Olivar is heard protesting that he was not weaving and shares that he will step out of the car but asks if he can undo his seatbelt. This is when Olivar grabs a gun and shoots the deputy. "Shots fired, shots fired, shots fired," yells the deputy into his radio. Deputy Kile quickly gets into the safety of his vehicle while Olivar speeds off in his vehicle. Even while shot, Deputy Kile begin to pursue the suspect because luckily his bulletproof vest saved the officer's life. "I want to recognize Deputy John Kile for his bravery and commitment, despite being shot in the chest. Even with the bulletproof vest doing it’s job, it is still very painful," stated Sheriff Reece. Eventually, Olivar stops his vehicle in the middle of the road and you can hear Deputy Kile yelling at the suspect to once again get out of the vehicle. However, Olivar begins to slowly drive away again. Eventually responding deputies and officers in the area showed up and Olivar was arrested. He is facing aggravated assault charges. Sheriff Butch Reece says that they wanted to recognize Deputies William Jackson and Jeff Sullivan, who assisted with the pursuit and apprehension of Olivar. Deputy Sullivan deployed stop sticks to disable Olivar's vehicle and Deputy Jackson was then able to deploy a PIT maneuver which brought the chase to an end. Additionally, Officer Terius Farley with the City of Gray Police Department was able to quickly join in pursuit with Deputy Kile and assist with taking the suspect into custody. Further investigations have found that Olivar has a history of mental illness. Sheriff Reece says that Olivar's family made several attempts to get him help. "Unfortunately we hear about situations like this on a regular basis. Families are struggling to get help for loved ones with mental health issues; however, it seems all too often that these individuals fall through the cracks," said Sheriff Reece. The office says they hope this will bring change to the current mental health system and that legislature can be a "driving force being this chance." " Unfortunately it sometimes takes an incident like this one to show how important accessibility to mental health care really is. Our jails are not designed to be mental health treatment facilities. Our hope is that this incident brings about a much-needed change in the mental health system," stated the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Reece thanked Governor Brian Kemp and Representative Ricky Williams for their support and calls to check on Deputy Kile. "We are so thankful no one was seriously injured in this incident and want to thank everyone in our community that has reached out during this time. The outpouring of support and prayers for both Deputy Kile and all our law enforcement is much appreciated," stated Sheriff Reece.
