On February 23, 2026, Paulinus Iheanacho Okoronkwo — a 58-year-old dual U.S.-Nigerian citizen operating a law practice in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles and concurrently serving as general manager of the upstream division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation — was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison after a jury convicted him in 2025 on five federal counts including three counts of transactional money laundering, one count of tax evasion, and one count of obstruction of justice, following a joint investigation by the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation. In October 2015, Addax Petroleum — a Switzerland-based subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned conglomerate Sinopec — wired $2,105,263 into the Interest on Lawyers' Trust Account of Okoronkwo's L.A. law firm, disguised as a consulting fee supported by a sham engagement letter bearing a fabricated Lagos address. Prosecutors proved the payment was a bribe for Okoronkwo to leverage his NNPC position to secure more favorable drilling-rights terms for Addax, terms potentially worth billions. Between 2016 and 2018 he laundered the proceeds through a shell company, directing $983,200 as a down payment on a Valencia, California home, failed to report the income on his 2015 federal tax return, and in 2022 lied to federal investigators by claiming the funds were client money he had never used to purchase property. U.S. District Judge John F. Walter of the Central District of California imposed the 87-month sentence alongside $923,824 in IRS restitution and forfeiture of approximately $1.04 million; the State Bar of California suspended Okoronkwo's law license in January 2026, one month before sentencing, leaving clients who had placed their trust — and their funds — in his hands with no recourse.
