A Border Patrol agent shoots an armed man near the Rio Grande in Brownsville, Texas — but the agent who fired the shots was not wearing a bodycam. What happened next was captured by other agents’ cameras. On February 12, 2025, Border Patrol’s Fort Brown Station Flex Team was conducting an anti-smuggling patrol near the Rio Grande when agents encountered a vehicle at a boat ramp off Highway 4. According to CBP, agents suspected an attempt to smuggle firearms into Mexico. The encounter quickly turned into a Border Patrol shooting after a man exited the vehicle carrying an Anderson AM-15 rifle. One agent opened fire, but that agent did not have a body camera recording the shooting. Other agents’ bodycam footage captured what happened immediately afterward, including the response to the wounded man and the effort to provide emergency medical care. The wounded man was transported to a hospital, while additional people at the scene were apprehended and the rifle was recovered. The incident was investigated by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility and the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, with the FBI also pursuing a federal case. This video examines the Border Patrol bodycam footage, the shooting, the events at the Rio Grande boat ramp, and what happened after the shots were fired.
