On March 30, 2023, in Beloit, Wisconsin, an on duty officer spotted a vehicle whose registered owner was involved in an armed robbery the previous day. Because of this, a traffic stop was initiated. The vehicle sped away, driving towards oncoming traffic, running red lights, and narrowly missing multiple vehicles. Eventually, the driver opened the car door while the car was still moving and exited the vehicle. It crashed into a street sign and tree. The driver ran from the vehicle towards a river and unexpectedly jumped over the wall and into the freezing river. Officers immediately began trying to figure out how they would get the driver, identified as Deangelo, out of the water safely. The threw a flotation device to him and he grabbed on. Eventually, a life jacket was given to him as well. After about 15 minutes in the water, officers began pulling Deangelo upriver where they could safely get him out of the water. They placed him on a carrying device and brought him to safety. He was handcuffed and placed under arrest. He was in the water for 19 minutes in total. Deangelo was medically cleared before being taken to jail. He was charged with vehicle operator fleeing or eluding an officer, 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety, resisting or obstructing an officer, vehicle operator failure to wear seat belt, failure to notify police of accident, failure to keep vehicle under control, opening car door on highway, reckless driving and hit and run, property adjacent to the highway. He was found guilty of all charges except 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety and resisting or obstructing an officer. He was sentenced to 18 months in state prison with two years of extended supervision, he was also fined around $1900. ❓Inquiries: LensOfLaw@gmail.com ☕Support Me: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lensoflaw 🔗My Links: https://lensoflaw.com The content we highlight is designed to provide a real-life glimpse into the encounters of law enforcement, not to demean or belittle those featured.
