On October 8, 2024, 61-year-old grandmother Renae Gamble attended a protest in Fairhope, Alabama wearing an inflatable costume and holding a sign. Less than a minute after arriving on scene, Officer Trent Babb of the Fairhope Police Department took her to the ground and arrested her. According to bodycam footage, Babb told Gamble, "I would like to hear how you would explain to my children what you're supposed to be." After the arrest, on a phone call captured by his own bodycam, he said the costume was "not going to be tolerated" because Fairhope is "a family town." Gamble was charged with four counts, including obstruction. The case went viral, was covered on late-night TV, and became a national story. In April 2026, the case went to trial. Renae Gamble was found not guilty on three charges, with the fourth dismissed. Her attorney has signaled a civil rights lawsuit is being prepared. All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. #alabama
