State officials released the body camera footage from one of the police officers at the officer-involved shooting in Saranac Lake in late June that left a man dead. The footage is shown from the perspective of Saranac Lake Village Police Officer Gabrielle Beebe. Beebe arrived at the Stewart's gas station at 8:34 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29 following a report of a stabbing inside the gas station, according to police. Her body camera footage shows her approaching Joshua De’Miguel Kavota, 33, who was standing outside the Stewart's. "What's up?" Beebe asked Kavota as she approached him. Kavota responded by saying another man assaulted him and trespassed on his property. Police later alleged that Kavota stabbed a man inside the gas station. "Where's the knife?" Beebe then asked. "I can't give you that," Kavota responded. "I need you to take it out of your pocket and give it to me," Beebe said. Kavota continued to decline to hand over his knife. He then said, "It's my property, I would be careful," trailing off as he put his right hand into his pocket with the knife and then quickly lunged toward Beebe. Beebe fell backward and, within a few seconds, it appears that her partner, Officer Aaron Sharlow, fired off two rounds from his gun at Kavota, who then fell to the parking lot. Within two minutes, Beebe began putting pressure on Kavota's wounds while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Saranac Lake EMS took Kavota to Adirondack Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy later confirmed his death was caused by gunshot-related injuries. The state Attorney General's office released the body camera footage today, "in order to increase transparency and strengthen public trust in these matters." "The release of this footage is not an expression of any opinion as to the guilt or innocence of any party in a criminal matter or any opinion as to how or whether any individual may be charged with a crime," a statement from the AG's office read. The AG's Office of Special Investigation is currently investigating the incident, a legal requirement of any officer-involved shooting death in New York State.
