On April 3, 2025, around 1:45 p.m., Mohave County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a stolen mail truck near Pearl Street and Chaparral Road in Fort Mohave. According to the postal employee, they had stepped away from the truck when another vehicle pulled up. A passenger exited, got into the mail truck, and drove off, with the original vehicle following. A little over an hour later, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police located the suspect vehicle abandoned in a parking lot off Casino Drive in Laughlin, across the Colorado River. Surveillance footage showed two individuals had been inside the vehicle when it arrived at the lot. During a search of the area, an officer spotted one of the suspects near a building along the riverbank. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Erick Tom Watkins, allegedly pointed a handgun at the officer, who then took cover. Watkins fled to a nearby boat dock, reportedly stole a boat, and ran it aground on the Arizona side of the river in Bullhead City. He then ran into an apartment complex along State Route 95. A Bullhead City police officer encountered Watkins in the complex's parking lot. As the officer exited the patrol vehicle, Watkins allegedly drew a handgun and opened fire. The officer, along with a second arriving officer, returned fire. Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither officer was injured. Authorities confirmed Watkins had multiple active felony warrants. Shortly afterward, the stolen mail truck was recovered about four miles from the original theft location. Some mail and personal belongings from the postal employee were missing.
