On Monday, the City of Akron made public the body camera footage capturing a moment where an Akron Police officer shot and injured a teenager in the hand. This incident occurred as soon as the officer arrived at the scene and noticed the teen holding what was later confirmed to be a replica gun. In accordance with city regulations, the footage was released within a week of the police shooting. The released video not only contains the footage of the incident but also includes the preceding 911 call and the entire interaction with the teenager. It has been appropriately edited to safeguard the anonymity of the juvenile involved. Around 7:11 p.m., the officer spotted an individual resembling the description provided by the caller walking along Britain Road near the intersection of Ottawa Avenue. Upon exiting his patrol car, the officer verbally instructed the individual, later identified as a 15-year-old boy, to display his hands, after which he discharged a shot. The teenager begins yelling, "It's fake! It's fake!" while the officer announces, "Shots fired!" over his radio. The officer commands the teen to the ground at gunpoint, and despite the teen's insistence that the gun is fake, he complies and drops to the ground. The officer proceeds to handcuff the 15-year-old, and blood from the gunshot wound is visible on the officer's body camera footage.
