Berwyn Police K-9 Officer Raul Perez Jr. crashed his police SUV into a utility pole in North Riverside, Illinois in the early morning hours of December 29, 2025. His K-9 partner, Romeo, escaped from the wrecked vehicle and ran loose near the roadway while officers searched for him. Responding North Riverside officers found open alcohol in the vehicle and learned Perez had been coming from a party. He was taken to the hospital, where Officer Whitesell read him the Illinois Warning to Motorist and his Miranda rights and placed him under arrest for DUI. His blood alcohol content was later reported at 0.12 -- above Illinois' 0.08 legal limit. He was relieved of his police powers pending an internal affairs investigation.
