On February 4, 2025, five Charlotte County Sheriff's Office deputies entered a wooded homeless camp behind Englewood Hospital in Sarasota County. They were assisting a bail bondsman who was searching for a woman with an active warrant. They never found her. Instead, they encountered Brian Berk -- a man with an active warrant of his own. Berk ran. Deputies chased him through the camp, took him down with hands-on force, and pressed a Taser to his collarbone. Not a single body camera was activated when deputies arrived. The cameras didn't come on until Tasers were drawn -- roughly an hour later. No Use of Force reports were filed. No Show of Force reports were filed. Three of the deputies labeled their body camera footage as "false activations." Nine days later, a Charlotte County Sheriff's Office records supervisor flagged the videos. The internal affairs investigation that followed produced a 22-page report with sustained findings of neglect of duty, improper conduct, and conduct unbecoming. Sheriff Bill Prummell called it "a conscious effort to conceal the incident." On April 14, 2025, four deputies had their appointments withdrawn: - Cpl. Russell Epeards - DFC Sean O'Keefe - DFC Timothy DeGrasse - Deputy Daniel Wilson A fifth deputy, DFC Jacob Earner, was reprimanded but kept his job. No criminal charges have been filed. --- Footage and records obtained through public records requests to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office under Florida's Public Records Law (Ch. 119, F.S.).
