On September 6, 2024, Middletown Township Police were called to the Target, where loss prevention personnel had detained a 19-year-old woman who was accused of shoplifting. According to loss prevention personnel, she scanned some items at self-checkout, then pressed the "pay" button, and then continued to scan all of the expensive items in her cart. However, once the "pay" button is pressed, the self-checkout machine does not allow you to scan additional merchandise. During this trip, she was accused of shoplifting $75.09 worth of merchandise. However, loss prevention personnel quickly determined that the same woman had attempted this shoplifting scheme 6 previous times for an additional $378.15. She was arrested and charged with shoplifting. On October 3, 2024, she pleaded guilty and was fined a total of $983 (including court costs). She was also ordered to pay restitution to Target in the amount of $453.24. The court agreed to dismiss the charge in 12 months if the woman has no additional offenses.
