Three New Mexico State Police officers were on a meal break at a restaurant in Pecos on the morning of October 20, 2022, when a man ran across the street and pounded on the door asking for help. A stranger in a black pickup towing a white camper had pointed a handgun at his partner in a gas station parking lot and threatened them both, along with any officer who came looking. It was ten forty six in the morning. One officer walked out and found the truck within a minute. What followed was a pursuit on State Road 50 in which the driver repeatedly crossed into oncoming lanes, struck three vehicles, and then ran into the forest on foot, leaving his wallet and driver's licence behind in the wreck. Two people from the cars he hit were taken to the hospital. A shelter in place went out to the houses nearby, and he was gone. He was not found again for nine hours. In that time a house alarm went off a few miles away, and a woman at a campground lost her car to a man who had just been talking to her. The second pursuit ended the same way as the first, with a head-on collision and a man running into the trees, this time in fading light and rough country near Rowe Mesa. The search that followed involved a State Police helicopter, a drone team, and a tactical unit walking an unlit mountainside after dark. Some of that footage is very difficult to see, and where it has been brightened it is marked on screen. The audio is exactly as it was recorded.
