They were called after two vehicles crashed. Officer Watkins first spoke with the 22-year-old driver of a 2020 Mercedes and Brandi, the 29-year-old driver of a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. Both cars had visible damage. The Mercedes driver said the Jeep struck his passenger side at high speed as he turned onto Parker Avenue from Lakeside Drive South. Officer Watkins then spoke with Brandi. She said she had just finished her shift at the Moose Lodge on North Main Street in Forked River. While speaking with her, he smelled alcohol. Brandi admitted she had consumed several drinks earlier that evening. Because he suspected she was impaired, Officer Watkins asked her to perform field sobriety tests. He started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, or HGN, test. Brandi had trouble smoothly tracking his finger. Her eyes shook clearly at maximum deviation, and the movement began before she reached the 45-degree point. During the Walk and Turn test, she failed to keep her heel against her toe on each step and often stepped away from the line. She also struggled with the One Leg Stand and did not lift her foot properly while trying to balance. After the crash, officers noticed the smell of alcohol, and Brandi admitted she had been drinking. She also had trouble completing the sobriety tests, so officers arrested her for driving while intoxicated. They took her to the Lacey Township Police Department for processing. Officer Watkins explained the required procedures for drivers, but she refused to provide a breath sample. After processing, she was released to a neighbor after signing a form concerning possible liability. Officer Watkins issued citations for operating under the influence, reckless driving, and refusing the breath test. If you enjoyed this BodyCamBust video.
