It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 3:22 a.m. on October 27, 2024, Patrolman Michael McCaffrey from the Beach Haven Police spotted a red 2011 Kia Optima heading north. It had no headlights on near Fifth Street and Bay Avenue. He tailed the car. Soon, he flipped on his emergency lights for a stop. The driver pulled over at 13th Street and Long Beach Boulevard. McCaffrey approached the driver. She turned out to be 22-year-old Alyssa King. He smelled perfume. But he saw signs of trouble too. She said she worked at the Black Whale. Earlier, she'd hit the Hudson House Bar, called The Hud. She owned up to a few drinks before driving. He spotted a wristband from Bird and Betty’s. Later, she admitted stopping there first. Sergeant Daly showed up to help. They asked Alyssa to do sobriety tests. First, she recited the alphabet from D to M. She messed it up. Next came the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. McCaffrey noted jerky eye movement. It lacked smooth tracking. Nystagmus held strong at the edge. It started before 45 degrees. Then, the Walk and Turn test. Alyssa didn't touch heel to toe. Her turn was off. Last, the One Leg Stand. She didn't lift her foot right. Her counting went wrong. The alcohol smell, her admission, and the failed tests led McCaffrey to arrest her for DUI. They impounded her car for 12 hours under John’s Law. He took her to the Beach Haven station. There, they read her the standard statement for drivers. She agreed to breath tests. The Alcotest showed 0.201% BAC—over twice the 0.08% limit. After processing, officers let her go to her mom. She signed the liability form for Alyssa, awaiting court.
