A little after ten at night on May 23, 2026, a driver pulled herself over on the shoulder of Interstate 95 in Flagler County, Florida. A few minutes earlier she had struck the car in front of her. She says she never felt it happen. She was forty seven years old, she had two grown children, and she had never been arrested in her life. She had come back from a family graduation ninety minutes away, and she says it was the first time she had ever driven a highway. She mentions it again and again across the next half hour, unprompted, to a deputy who has not asked. What makes this stop worth forty minutes of your time is not the arrest. It is the deputy. There is another driver standing twenty feet away, and rather than ask the real questions in front of them, she walks the driver up the shoulder first and explains why. She refuses to run the field sobriety exercises beside live traffic and moves the whole scene twice looking for ground she is comfortable with. She narrates every step before she takes it. She loosens the handcuffs for a bad shoulder, then double locks them so they cannot tighten, and says out loud why she is doing it. She lets the driver call her son. The three standardised exercises follow, on the shoulder, barefoot. None of them produce a number. They produce an opinion, and the number comes later at the jail.
