Everyone Ran From the Gunfire—These People Turned Back Two mass shootings. Two completely different locations. But while hundreds of people had no choice but to run for their lives, a few individuals made the extraordinary decision to turn back and confront the gunmen. The first attack occurred at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. Gunmen Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram opened fire from a footbridge toward a crowd gathered for a Hanukkah celebration. While gunfire continued, civilian Ahmed Al Ahmed risked his life, approached Sajid from behind, tackled him, and managed to wrestle the weapon away. Moments later, police arrived and a gunfight erupted. The second shooting occurred in Twin Falls, Idaho. Chad Williams suddenly opened fire at a crowded In-N-Out Burger before retrieving an AR-style rifle and continuing his attack. Off-duty Idaho State Police Specialist Steve McClain helped evacuate people from the restaurant before confronting the shooter. Elsewhere near the scene, young employee Braxton Stuebe had no firearm and no tactical training. Yet when he came face-to-face with Williams, he remained calm and kept talking to him long enough for other people nearby to escape. Two different shootings. Different gunmen. But the same remarkable choice: ordinary people refusing to turn away when someone else’s life was in danger. This video reconstructs both shootings, the moments civilians and police confronted the attackers, and the split-second decisions that may have saved multiple lives.
