On Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the Chief of Police authorized the release of the name of the officer involved in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred on Thursday, November 20, 2025, in the 77th Street Area. The officer involved has been identified as Police Officer III Marvin Pena, Serial No. 42444. According to preliminary information, at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers assigned to 77th Street Patrol Division responded to a radio call of an Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW), suspect there now, in the 2100 block of West 76th Street. An LAPD Air Support Division helicopter responded and began orbiting the location. Air unit personnel observed the suspect, later identified as 57-year-old Anthony Whitsey, standing in the front yard of his residence. The tactical flight officer observed Whitsey fire approximately three to five rounds from a pistol toward the police helicopter, prompting an “Officer Needs Help” broadcast. As ground officers arrived and were directed to Whitsey’s location, they observed him holding a handgun in the front yard. Officers gave Whitsey multiple commands to drop the weapon. Whitsey failed to comply, and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred. Whitsey dropped the handgun but refused commands to surrender. As additional officers arrived, officers deployed 40mm less-lethal launcher rounds, striking Whitsey. Whitsey retreated into his residence and continued to refuse to surrender. Metropolitan Division K-9 and SWAT personnel responded for a barricaded suspect. Whitsey later exited his residence and was taken into custody after being bitten by a K-9. Whitsey was not struck by gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital, treated for his injuries, and cleared for booking. Whitsey was booked for 245(c) Penal Code – Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer. The firearm possessed by Whitsey was recovered and booked as evidence. No officers or community members were injured during this incident. The LAPD Force Investigation Division (FID) is conducting the investigation.⚠️ Viewer Discretion Advised This video discusses a real officer-involved shooting and law enforcement response.
