On May 23, 2022, officers with the Lilburn Police Department responded to a shopping center on Pleasant Hill Road after reports of a vehicle crash and a naked man running through the parking lot. Body-camera footage shows officers attempting to speak with McKenley before the encounter rapidly escalates. McKenley allegedly barked like a dog, ignored repeated commands, and charged toward officers multiple times. After several Taser deployments, officers were finally able to detain him and call EMS. The investigation did not end in the parking lot. Officers later located a crashed rental vehicle near a wooded area, McKenley’s clothing and identification, and a mushroom-like substance that was entered into evidence as suspected hallucinogenic mushrooms. While McKenley was being detained, officers were also notified that someone had shattered the front entrance of a nearby Cricket Wireless store and forced their way inside. Investigators later connected the damaged store, the vehicle crash, and the confrontation with police to the same incident. McKenley was transported to the hospital and charged with second-degree criminal damage to property and simple assault. During the court proceedings, a judge ordered a mental evaluation to determine his competency to stand trial. At the time this video was produced, court records reviewed still listed the case as open.
