On February 6, 2025, investigators from the Des Moines Police Department's Narcotics Control Section were conducting surveillance as part of a methamphetamine trafficking investigation. Officers were monitoring a vehicle occupied by 43-year-old David Leroy Kintz Jr. and 52-year-old Jennifer Stewart. Stewart stopped the vehicle in a parking lot at SE 14th Street and Maury Street, where Kintz exited, carrying a duffel bag, and began walking along Maury Street. Officer Titus Deford approached Kintz, who repeatedly put his hands in his pockets despite being instructed to keep them visible. When asked if he had any weapons, Kintz stated he had a screwdriver before suddenly pulling it out and lunging at Officer Neal Shaffer. Both Deford and Shaffer responded by firing their handguns, striking and killing Kintz. Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
