Presented in partnership with @ShowMeCops On March 1, 2022, wanted fugitive Johnnie Joe Coffer Jr. led deputies on a dangerous 41‑minute pursuit across Springfield, Missouri after hijacking a truck. Speeds reached 90 mph through busy streets, neighborhoods, and a school zone as Coffer fled from Greene County’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit. In November, 2021, Coffer had been placed on house arrest with a GPS monitoring device awaiting a court date related to a prior arrest on burglary charges. Later that month, he removed the device and failed to appear at court. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and the Fugitive Apprehension Unit began searching for him. After several months, investigators narrowed in on his most likely location. While members of the Unit searched the area around his suspected residence, one of them noticed a man matching Coffer's description exit a nearby wooded area and run to a white pickup truck that had stopped near the curb. The individual got in the passenger side and the truck drove away. Members of the Unit followed the truck in unmarked vehicles. After following for a short distance, deputies activated their lights and siren to initiate an investigative traffic stop. When the driver pulled over, the passenger shoved him out of the vehicle, stole the truck, and fled. The driver shouted to the deputies, "He stole my truck!" While multiple unmarked units pursued the stolen truck (later to be joined by marked patrol units), one deputy made contact with the driver. The driver, who would later identify himself as Coffer's cousin, confirmed that it was Coffer who had stolen the vehicle and fled. It was later learned that the cousin had received a call from Coffer stating that he needed a ride because "someone was trying to kill him." After picking up Coffer, the cousin noticed a vehicle following them. Coffer told his cousin that the person inside the vehicle was the one trying to kill him. The cousin then noticed the vehicle appeared to be an unmarked police vehicle. Shortly after realizing this, the vehicle activated its lights. Coffer yelled at his cousin to run, but the cousin refused and pulled over. It was at that point that Coffer stole the truck. During the chase, Coffer called 911 threatening “suicide by cop” if deputies didn’t back off. At one point, while he was circling a gas station, his ex-wife attempted to intervene and convince him to stop. After multiple TVI attempts, the pursuit ultimately ended when he rammed a patrol vehicle head‑on and was taken into custody. Methamphetamine was found where he was sitting in the vehicle. Initial charges included: - 🚔 Vehicle Hijacking - 🚔 Resisting Arrest (Felony) - 🚔 Assault 1st Degree on a Special Victim - 🚔 Possession of a Controlled Substance Those were later amended to: - 🚔 Resisting Arrest (Felony) - 🚔 Possession of a Controlled Substance - 🚔 Tampering With Electronic Monitoring Equipment Sentencing information for this case, as well as his other outstanding cases, is available at the end of the video. 📍 Location: Springfield, MO 📅 Date: March 1, 2022 Map courtesy of GISGeography https://gisgeography.com/missouri-map/ Suspect and incident photos obtained from the Greene County Sheriff's Office.
