A community trunk-or-treat event at North Kirkwood Middle School turned into chaos when a shirtless man walked through the crowd, whispering threats and getting inches from parents’ faces. Witnesses say he then pulled a handgun and fired multiple rounds into the air as families rushed to grab their children and escape. Several men in the crowd rushed in, tackling the suspect and holding him down until officers arrived. The shooter was identified as 35-year-old Matthew McCullik, an off-duty St. Louis County police officer. McCullik was taken into custody and later charged with multiple felonies including armed criminal action, endangering the welfare of a child, and making terroristic threats. What began as an innocent school event became a terrifying reminder of how fast violence can erupt in public spaces.
