The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing (CIB) video that includes audio, visuals and information related to a critical incident which occurred on June 30, 2022. This incident began in the area of 106th Drive and Colter Street, when Phoenix police were sent to the area to investigate a report of a suspicious person in the neighborhood. While officers were talking with a man related to the call, they heard a gunshot nearby. Their attention was diverted to a man holding a gun. Officers yelled commands at the man to drop the gun. The man did not obey the commands and an officer fired his weapon. The man with the gun then took off running through the neighborhood and exchanged gunfire with officers. Officers began searching the neighborhood looking for the man. While this was occurring, Phoenix police received a 911 call about a person with a gunshot wound at a home nearby. The woman making the call indicated that her husband had been shot. Officers responded to the home and put a plan together to contact the man inside. He was called out of the house, taken into custody and found to have a gunshot wound. The man was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was later booked into jail. A search warrant was served on the home and a firearm was recovered. The officers involved in this incident have approximately 3 years of service and are assigned to the Maryvale-Estrella Mountain Precinct. Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete. An internal investigation by the Professional Standard Bureau is currently underway, in addition to a criminal investigation. Once the criminal investigation is complete it will then be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
