On November 23, 2024, the Ulta store inside the Mesilla Valley Mall observed a shoplifter leave the store with allegedly over $1,000 worth of merchandise. They called the New Mexico Mounted Patrol (NMMP), a contracted police force assigned to patrol the mall (https://newmexicomountedpatrol.org/), but Ulta only wanted the woman trespassed. While they were locating the 27-year-old woman, she was busy stealing underwear and fake eyelashes from another store. That store was willing to prosecute the woman, so she was detained by NMMP troopers until the Las Cruces Police Department arrived. While being interviewed, the woman gave the name and date of birth of her sister. Once she was placed in the back of the police car, she decided to tell Officer Rodriguez her real name. That is when it was revealed that she had an active warrant for her arrest from a previous shoplifting case. Instead of being cited and released, the woman was transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
