Saturday, April 16, 2022 A New Mexico State police officer was dispatched to do a welfare check on a man who was slumped over the wheel in a brown BMW near Prewitt, NM on I-40. The officer arrived and the man got out of his vehicle with his hands up before the officer could even get to the drivers BMW. The officer starts to talk with the driver now identified as 26 year old Oliver Ashley Toledo Saldivar. What the officer didn’t know was the driver was a suspect in a murder that took place in North Carolina just 4 days prior back on April 12th and was armed with a handgun in his jacket pocket. The officer tells the driver to step back to his vehicle to figure out what’s going on. The driver starts digging around in his vehicle and then starts locking the driver side doors and trunk. After the officer gets the driver to step back to his vehicle the driver starts reaching in his coat. The officer tells the suspect to cut it out but that’s when the suspect tackles the officer and begins trying to pull his gun from his jacket. The suspect decides to start biting the officer right forearm. The officer fires a total of 4 rounds at the suspect. One round hit the suspect in the stomach. A passing semi truck driver saw the struggle and pulled over to help the officer. The semi driver kicked the suspects gun out of reach of the suspect and helped the officer put the suspect into custody. The suspect ended up dying at the scene and the officer was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for his injuries.
