On May 3rd, 2024, deputies were dispatched to a Walmart after store management reported a suspected employee theft scheme involving the store’s Customer Value Program (CVP). The CVP system is designed to reduce the price of returned, damaged, or incomplete merchandise so the store can still recover some profit. However, investigators discovered that employees were abusing the system by marking perfectly new items as discounted. According to store officials, expensive electronics—including PlayStation 5 consoles, TVs, printers, computers, and gaming monitors—were being marked down by hundreds of dollars before being purchased by employees. During the investigation, the suspect admitted that the scheme started when managers requested discounted items for themselves. What began as small requests eventually grew into a “snowball effect,” with employees repeatedly lowering prices on merchandise for personal purchases. After being read their Miranda rights, the employee admitted to participating in the fraudulent price reductions and purchasing the discounted items. Deputies ultimately placed the suspect under arrest. The employee was later charged with scheme to defraud. He was charged with scheme to defraud.
