The mayor of Pueblo called out lawmakers on Monday as the city shared an update on a deadly officer-involved shooting from June 19. Mayor Heather Graham said the “catch and release” program they do “daily” isn’t working. “Today is when I am asking my fellow Puebloans to demand more which includes harsher sentencing, legislation which allows for it, and a commitment to push for a more collaborative effort,” Graham said. “I need help from local and state legislators. I need help from all of you. While the officer-involved shooting is tragic, not only for the man who was shot, but it continues to take a toll on our dispatchers and officers.” Graham made the statements before Pueblo Police provided an update on a deadly shooting that involved police outside of Popeyes in mid-June. The police chief explained someone called dispatch the night of June 19 to explain they saw a man with a gun. The reporting party shared a license plate number and what the potential suspects were wearing. When police arrived about six minutes later, they found the vehicle parked at Popeyes. Officers tried to make contact with the suspect inside, and police say the suspect refused to obey commands, from within the vehicle that had tinted windows. Police can be heard yelling at the suspect directing him to put his hands up multiple times. “Instead of doing what he was directed, Mr. Valdez raised a gun toward one of our officers and fired six times through the front windshield, narrowly missing one of our officers,” Police Chief Chris Noeller explained. Police returned fire killing the suspect, identified as Ronald Valdez. A stolen handgun and drug paraphernalia were found inside the vehicle, according to Chief Noeller. The chief added that incidents like this take a toll on his officers.
