On the night of March 21st, 2025, Champaign police were called to an apartment on West Healey Street for a stabbing. They found 22-year-old Nathan Gudeman dead in the street and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kaitlyn Lassy, gravely wounded inside — stabbed in the neck, spine, and abdomen, her throat cut. By every medical measure she should not have survived. The knife had missed her carotid artery by one millimeter. She did survive — and from the first moments, before surgery, she gave police a name: Alex Muanambuta, a 23-year-old acquaintance she had let inside. This is the bodycam and interrogation footage of a soft-spoken man with no criminal record and a carefully rehearsed alibi — a story a judge would later call "too perfect to be real." It's also the story of the survivor whose steady testimony took that story apart. On November 20th, 2025, Muanambuta was found guilty on all seven counts. On January 21st, 2026, he was sentenced to 100 years in prison. Footage obtained via public records request from the Champaign Police Department (Case 2025-00008942). Bodycam: Ofc. Carrillo (on-scene) and Det. Hill (interview).
