"Because I'm mean. I don't need to pay for anything." On September 6, 2025, Stuart Police responded to T-Nail Room in Stuart, Florida after a woman allegedly attempted to pay a $120 nail bill using two credit cards bearing different names. Police say she first identified herself as "Leona Thornton" — spelling it twice, differently both times — and had no ID on her. She later admitted her real first name was Irene. Officers say she had already thrown the cards into a nearby trash can, and that her bag held merchandise with the tags still attached. Then body camera captures the detail that changed the case: one of the stolen cards had already been used that day to buy a bearded dragon. The same bearded dragon she was still carrying when officers moved in. "You can't take my bearded dragon." When an officer asked whether she had ever planned to pay, she answered: "No. Because I'm mean. I don't need to pay for anything." Irene Leona Thornton was arrested on fraud, false identification and theft-related charges.
