On August 1, 2025. An officer from the Hartford Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a white SUV for speeding. After the officer activated his emergency lights, the vehicle turned into an alleyway and continued without stopping. The driver, (Derik) then returned to the roadway and failed to stop at a stop sign. Approximately one minute after the officer activated his emergency lights, Derik pulled over and exited the vehicle. He was ordered to lie down and complied with commands. The officer retrieved K9 Ranger from his squad and advised Derik that if he was to move, he would get bitten. Shortly later, he reached into his pocket and K9 Ranger was deployed, briefly biting Derik on the left arm before quickly releasing. As the officer approached Derik, other squads were arriving. Derik tensed up his muscles and put his arm underneath himself while officers attempted to handcuff him. Eventually, officers were able to force his arms behind his back and secured Derik in handcuffs. He was then searched and placed into a squad car before being transported to the hospital. K9 Ranger was deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle and alerted near the driver's side door to the presence of narcotics. While speaking with Derik, officers could smell the odor of alcohol and a search of his vehicle revealed opened and closed beer cans. Officers also located a glass pipe with marijuana residue, two THC vape pens, and a grinder containing a small amount of marijuana. While at the hospital, officers handcuffed Derik to the bed and asked if he would do field sobriety tests. Derik responded that he would not answer questions without a lawyer present and said he did not consent to any searches or seizures. Derik was then asked if he would provide a blood sample and he kept stating that he would not answer questions without a lawyer present. Derik refused to say yes or no to the blood draw and officers applied to get a warrant for it. Derik then became extremely agitated, shouting that officers were illegally holding him at the hospital, and mentioned that they will be open to litigation. He also continually interrupted officers and called them multiple vulgar names. After getting a warrant for the blood, officers entered the hospital room where Derik was hitting the call remote on a table multiple times. An officer grabbed the remote and told him to let go. Derik refused and officers had to forcefully remove the remote from his hand. He then called officers more vulgar names and stated he did not have to cooperate. Officers then tried placing handcuffs on Derik's right arm. He started to pull away and held his arm to his chest. Derik was asked twice to stop resisting before officers forcefully handcuffed him to the hospital bed. Eventually, Derik allowed a medical technician to obtain a blood sample but continued to say it was unlawful. Before transporting Derik to the Jail, he stated “ The second the cuffs come undone, I'm gonna kill you”. Derik was then escorted to a squad car and released to the Washington County Jail staff. Derik was found guilty for Battery or Threat to a Law Enforcement Officer, OWI 5th, and Possession of THC. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison and 4 years of extended supervision.
