On February 23, 2024, at about 8:55 PM, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit) arrested 32-year-old Tyrell Murphy of Hyde Park after a traffic stop near Morton and Harvard Streets in Mattapan. Officers stopped a speeding vehicle with heavily tinted windows, and during the encounter noticed Murphy’s nervous behavior and a bulge in his hoodie pocket. When ordered out of the vehicle, he resisted and reached for his waist, leading to a struggle. Officers recovered a stolen Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 with an extended magazine loaded with nine rounds, along with pills suspected to be Ecstasy and several bags of marijuana from his belongings. Murphy was charged with firearm and ammunition offenses, possession of a firearm during a felony, possession with intent to distribute Class B and Class D substances, and receiving stolen property under $1200. He was arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
