15-Year-Old Suspect Asks "I Killed Somebody?" After Fatal Head-On Crash On July 28, 2022, around 7 p.m., Chesterfield County police responded to a reported armed robbery at an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Cricklewood Drive. A man who had gone there for an online meetup to buy tools was pistol-whipped by three suspects, who then stole his red Dodge pickup truck. Officers located the truck on Hopkins Road and attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop, and a pursuit followed involving patrol cars and an aviation unit. The truck crossed the double yellow line to pass another vehicle and struck a silver Kia Rio head-on. The Kia's driver, 23-year-old Khalil R. Hamlin, died at the scene. His passenger, an adult female, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the heavily damaged truck on foot. A K-9 unit tracked him a short distance away, and he was taken into custody. He had lacerations on his arms and lower back. Investigators recovered his shoe from the driver-side floorboard and matched his DNA to bloodstains on the deployed airbag. The driver was identified as 15-year-old Shamon Marquis Spain, who was charged as an adult. In April 2024, a Chesterfield County Circuit Court jury rejected his claim that he had been a backseat passenger and convicted him of felony murder, felony eluding, and felony hit and run. On January 13, 2025, the court sentenced him to 40 years for murder with 28 suspended, 10 years for the hit and run with all 10 suspended, and 5 years for eluding. He is now 19, incarcerated at Lunenburg Correctional Center, with a release date of December 22, 2036. On May 19, 2026, the Virginia Court of Appeals affirmed the convictions, rejecting Spain's argument that the Commonwealth's failure to disclose a DNA expert's failed proficiency test entitled him to a new trial. The court found the undisclosed information would not have changed the outcome given the other evidence establishing he was driving. 👇 Don't forget to interact!
