On 13 September 2018 a co-worker found Karen Navarra, 68, dead in a dining chair in her San Jose home with a kitchen knife in her hand. It looked like a suicide. The medical examiner said the wounds to her head could not have been self-inflicted. Her stepfather, Anthony Aiello, 90, told detectives he had brought her a pizza on Saturday 8 September and stayed about five minutes. Karen was wearing a Fitbit. It recorded her heart rate spiking at 3:20 p.m. and stopping at 3:28. A neighbour's doorbell camera recorded a car matching his in her driveway from 3:12 until at least 3:33. This is the full record, in order: the welfare-check bodycam from 13 September, the officers who found him on his own street the next morning, the arrest on 25 September, and the interrogation at the San Jose Police Department Homicide Unit, where he is shown the two clocks and asked to explain the twenty minutes between them. Anthony Aiello was arrested on 25 September 2018, charged with murder and pleaded not guilty. He died in custody on 10 September 2019, aged 91, before the case reached trial. The charge was dismissed. He was never convicted, and nothing in this video should be taken as a finding of guilt.
