The Charleston County Coroner's Office has identified the suspect shot and killed in this incident. James Pierce, 28, of Walterboro, died on scene from a gunshot wound, the coroner's office said. Charleston County Sheriff's Office officials say a shooting involving one of their deputies closed a portion of Savannah Highway Sunday. Officials said the deputy was shot and seriously injured and taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was listed in stable condition. He was released from the hospital Sunday night around 9 p.m. A subject was also shot, officials said. They were pronounced deceased on scene. A female drive from the vehicle was detained. Officials said shots were fired as the deputy conducted a traffic stop around 3:45 p.m. Deputy Evan Cubbage, 36, was struck by the gunfire and returned fire, fatally striking the subject. Officials say Cubbage suffered three gunshot wounds in the exchange. He's been with the sheriff's office since 2020. Deputy Alexander Hodge, 34, was the second deputy involved in the shooting, officials said. He was hired in 2018 and was not injured in this incident. Northbound lanes were closed near 4915 Savannah Highway until around midnight, when the scene of the shooting was cleared, according to CCSO. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) will investigate, and CCSO will conduct an internal investigation per protocol.
