On April 12, 2022, staff at Hammett Bowen Jr. Elementary School in Ocala, Florida grew concerned about the behavior of a first-grade teacher — she seemed disoriented, exhausted, and at times appeared to be falling asleep in front of her students. Administrators sent her to the school clinic for a wellness check. But before she left campus, other teachers noticed her slip into a classroom bathroom — one that her young students also used — as if she were trying to hide something inside. When the school resource officer searched that bathroom, he found a small yellow bag. Inside was a pill bottle bearing the teacher's name, a red straw, half of a green pill, and a plastic baggie of green powder that field-tested positive for MDMA — ecstasy. A further search turned up Suboxone, a controlled medication used to treat opioid dependence. The teacher, 37-year-old Hiromi Nakagawa Adams, had worked in Marion County schools since 2006. She was located off campus and taken into custody by the Marion County Sheriff's Office, charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, released on a $4,000 bond the next morning, and placed on paid administrative leave while the district opened its own investigation. This is the full bodycam account of how an ordinary school day turned into a criminal investigation — and how something as vague as "concerning behavior" led authorities to evidence no one expected to find inside an elementary school. Bodycam via the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Some footage may be blurred or muted to protect the privacy of students, staff, and witnesses.
