Auglaize County Sheriffs Office / Multiple Agencies January 28, 2011 --- On January 28, 2011, the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office and St. Marys Police Department received information from an off-duty Auglaize County Deputy Sheriff that he received a phone call from a person by the name Dennis Slone. Slone advised the deputy that he was on his was to St. Marys, was going to pull a gun on a cop and do a suicide by cop. This deputy attempted to talk Slone out of doing this, but he hung up on the deputy. Auglaize County law enforcement started a search for Slone. Slone also called the Wapakoneta Police Department and told the dispatcher he had a gun and was going to St. Marys and force a cop to shot him. A Wapakoneta police officer who knew Slone obtained his cell phone number from the dispatcher. The officer contacted Slone and tried to talk him out of doing this. Slone told the officer they did not like him in St. Marys, so he was going there to have one of the cops shoot him. He advised the officer he was on State Route 33 at Bay Road at this time and had a gun in the car. The Auglaize County Sheriff's Office and St. Marys Police observed Slone in a dark green Expedition on State Route 33 at the State Route 66 exit to St. Marys. Slone exited onto State Route 66 with Deputy Osborne directly behind Slone. There were other Sheriffs and St. Marys' Police cars behind Slone and Osborn. As the vehicles came around the cloverleaf onto State Route 66 south toward St. Marys, Sgt. Brian Little was setting on the bridge waiting for the procession. As Slone passed, Little pulled in front of Osborn with his red/blue light and siren on. There was a slow-speed pursuit; speed never exceeded 30 MPH. Slone just would not stop. He would come to a red light, stop and then proceed through the light. Slone lead the procession of police vehicles through several streets in St. Marys. Slone pulled into the Marathon Gas Station, 202 West South Street in St. Marys, OH followed by Little Slone parked in the southeast comer of the lot with Little at an angle behind Slone. Slone exited his vehicle with a gun in a holster in his hands. Little was yelling for Slone to put the gun down. Slone tumed toward Little and Little shot Slone three times. Slone later died at a local hospital in St. Marys. Slone had been a St. Marys Police Officer at one time and was terminated after not successfully completing his probationary period. Slone had also been an Auxiliary for the Wapakoneta Police Department. --- The above text is a direct copy from the BCI investigation into the shooting. Auglaize Sheriff Sergeant Brian Little was cleared of any wrong-doing in May of 2011.
