Fort Smith, AR – March 26, 2026: A high-speed pursuit involving a black 2020 Jeep Cherokee ended in the arrest of Joseph Carl Bassett after a dangerous chase through residential streets, according to the Arkansas State Police (ASP). At approximately 12:11 PM, an ASP trooper observed Bassett driving with an expired February 2026 paper tag on North 50th Street near Armour Street. The vehicle, which already had front-end damage, made an abrupt left turn in front of a red passenger vehicle, failing to yield to oncoming traffic. The trooper activated emergency lights and siren, and the Jeep came to a stop near North 50th Street. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers noted the driver making furtive movements. Bassett initially complied with instructions to exit the vehicle but appeared nervous. When asked for consent to search the Jeep, he refused, prompting officers to request a K-9 unit from the Fort Smith Police Department. While waiting for assistance, Bassett ran back to his vehicle and fled the scene at approximately 12:20 PM. A pursuit ensued with speeds reaching 61 mph in a 25 mph zone and 101 mph on Midland Boulevard. Officers attempted a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) maneuver to stop the Jeep, which initially failed. The vehicle continued westbound on Kelley Highway, nearly colliding with another SUV, before officers successfully executed a TVI, causing the Jeep to leave the roadway and stop in the front yard of a residence on North 27th Street. Both officers provided lethal coverage and gave multiple commands for Bassett to exit the vehicle. He eventually complied and was taken into custody without further incident. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately two and a half bars of suspected Xanax in the center console and a glass pipe containing a white residue. All items were seized and submitted to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for testing. Bassett was evaluated by EMS at the scene and transported to Baptist Hospital for medical clearance prior to booking at the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center. Minor cosmetic damage occurred to both officers’ patrol vehicles and additional damage to the suspect vehicle. Photographs of all vehicles were documented. Charges filed against Bassett include: Fleeing – Felony (Vehicle or Conveyance – Substantial Danger of Death) Fleeing – On Foot Obstructing Governmental Operations Reckless Driving – 1st Degree Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class A Misdemeanor) Possession of Drug Paraphernalia No Liability Insurance Owner Fail to Register Vehicle – Expired Tags Criminal Mischief – 1st Degree A warrant was also issued for a hot check totaling $1,000.
