On February 9, 2026, Teresa "Terrie" Brady — a 70-year-old president of Duval Teachers United, the Jacksonville union representing approximately 6,500 Duval County school employees — was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison and ordered to pay full restitution toward $2,600,235.99 stolen after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, aiding and abetting wire and mail fraud, and money laundering, following a joint investigation by IRS Criminal Investigation and the FBI. Between 2013 and 2022, Brady and Executive Vice President Ruby George systematically drained union funds by fabricating leave-time payouts Brady had never earned, routing unauthorized bonuses, and submitting false reimbursements, with the two signing each other's checks to keep payments off the books and feeding false information to the union's outside auditor while falsifying mandatory financial filings to Florida's public-employee regulators. Brady pulled roughly $20,000 in phantom leave to cover her own residential roof repairs and used approximately $44,000 of stolen funds to pay personal credit-card debt, while the union's own headquarters deteriorated around member meetings — rats in the walls, mold spreading, and the building's roof collapsing — conditions the union had no money left to fix. The sentence was imposed by Chief U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard in the Middle District of Florida.
