On March 15, 2024, Milwaukee County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport after TSA flagged a man’s ID as potentially fake. According to agents, the individual snatched the ID back and ran off toward a parking structure. Described as a tall Black male, around 6'3", wearing faded jeans, grey boxers, and a camo backpack, the suspect was spotted by deputies roughly 10 minutes later thanks to a photo provided by TSA. When confronted, the man—later identified as Demarte—initially gave a false name, claiming he was someone named Nicolas and providing a fake birth date. Deputies handcuffed him and moved him to a more private location for questioning. During this process, another man approached and identified himself as Demarte’s cousin, Asumani. He was also taken in for questioning but was eventually released without any charges. Demarte claimed he was flying from Milwaukee to Houston. However, investigators found out he actually lived in Mississippi and had an outstanding warrant in Louisiana. A search at the airport substation turned up the fake ID, which Demarte admitted to using, along with a shocking discovery—155 stolen or forged checks inside his backpack, linked to multiple names. In total, the fraudulent checks amounted to more than $243,000. Authorities say Demarte successfully cashed 13 of them, pocketing nearly $92,000. He was later convicted on multiple felony charges, including identity theft, financial fraud, money laundering, and theft. The court handed down a heavy sentence: 15 years in prison, 22 years of extended supervision, and 38 years of probation. His probation terms are strict—requiring community service, education or job training, steady employment, mental health and substance abuse treatment, regular drug testing, and DNA submission.
