Julissa Thaler Julissa Thaler is an American woman from Spring Park, Minnesota, convicted in 2023 of murdering her six-year-old son, Eli Hart. The case drew widespread attention for its brutality and for questions it raised about child protection and custody decisions in Minnesota. Key facts Full name: Julissa Thaler Birth year: c. 1994 Residence: Spring Park, Minnesota, U.S. Conviction: First-degree premeditated murder (2023) Sentence: Life imprisonment without parole Victim: Eli Hart, age 6 Crime and investigation In May 2022, police in Orono, Minnesota, stopped Thaler’s car, which had a shattered rear window and was missing a tire. Officers later discovered the body of her son, Eli Hart, in the vehicle’s trunk. Investigators determined that Thaler had fatally shot Eli nine times with a shotgun inside her sedan before driving with his body in the car. She was arrested shortly afterward, still showing traces of blood, and charged with second-degree murder; prosecutors later upgraded the charge to first-degree premeditated murder. Trial and sentencing During the January 2023 trial, jurors heard evidence that Thaler had recently regained full custody of Eli after a period in foster care, despite documented concerns about her mental health and substance use. The jury deliberated for roughly two hours before finding her guilty of both first- and second-degree murder. In February 2023, a Hennepin County judge sentenced her to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. At sentencing, Thaler maintained her innocence and declined to express remorse.Aftermath and public response Eli Hart’s father, Tory Hart, and his fiancée, Josie Josephson, have since established initiatives to memorialize the boy, including efforts to build a playground in his honor in Mound, Minnesota. They also filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Dakota County officials, alleging failures in the custody process that returned Eli to his mother shortly before his death.
