#CrimeCamNow On May 14, 2024, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office responded to a call from Best Buy employees in Vero Beach, Florida, about two suspected shoplifters who had reportedly targeted multiple Best Buy locations across the state. A deputy met with an employee outside the store, who explained that a male suspect was currently inside while a female suspect waited in a "getaway car" in the parking lot. Deputies positioned themselves outside, waiting for the male suspect to exit. When he emerged and was asked to stop, he threw an item to the ground and fled on foot. However, deputies quickly apprehended him. As the deputies approached the vehicle, the female suspect was preparing to drive off but was ordered to stop. She complied and immediately claimed, “I didn’t do anything.” She was handcuffed and continued repeating her denial. Deputies searched the vehicle and discovered stolen items. When questioned, the female suspect insisted that the items were hers, claiming she paid cash but had no receipts. Employees confirmed that the suspects had been responsible for losses totaling approximately $17,000 across multiple stores statewide. The female suspect, after being read her Miranda rights, agreed to speak but was initially uncooperative. She claimed she had stayed in the car the entire time and knew nothing about the thefts. However, she eventually admitted to visiting the Vero Beach Best Buy about a month earlier but could not recall what was stolen. Deputies confronted the male suspect, who claimed his partner had not stolen anything. When informed that surveillance footage from two weeks prior showed her shoplifting, he refused to speak further after being read his Miranda rights. A search of the vehicle revealed a notebook containing a detailed list of store names, items, and prices for resale. When questioned about the notebook, the female suspect initially denied ownership but later, frustrated, dismissed it as “silly stuff.” The female suspect was charged with grand theft over $300. The male suspect faced charges including resisting an officer without violence, felony grand theft over $300, felony first-degree petit theft, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were transported to jail for booking. Employees expressed relief and gratitude, noting that the suspects had caused significant losses before their arrest.
