A routine investigation involving a stolen vehicle quickly turned into a major police shooting after officers attempted to take a suspect into custody in Houston. At approximately 7:23 p.m., an off-duty, uniformed Houston Police Officer working an extra-employment assignment in the 4000 block of Westheimer Road located a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Fort Bend County. The vehicle was also reportedly connected to an assault investigation. On-duty Houston Police Officers arrived to assist and attempted to conduct a felony traffic stop on the parked vehicle. Officers repeatedly issued verbal commands, but the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Jamarcus Oneal Spates, remained inside the vehicle and did not comply for an extended period. At approximately 7:53 p.m., officers made a coordinated approach toward the vehicle. According to police, Spates then pushed open the driver's door and extended his arm in what officers believed was a shooting position. Eight officers and one sergeant discharged their duty weapons, striking Spates. Before officers extracted him from the vehicle, a police drone was deployed to assist with the situation. The incident remains a serious example of how quickly a police standoff can escalate when officers believe a suspect is reaching for or presenting a firearm.
