At around 10:30 a.m. officers were investigating a car with three occupants at the La Quinta Inn on South Coast Drive off of Harbor Boulevard, Costa Mesa Lt. Bryan Wadkins said. Police did not say what the officers were investigating. The officers detained two of the people in the car, a man and woman, Wadkins said. When officers tried to take the driver into custody, he reversed the car and hit his passengers. Then he accelerated toward officers and did not follow their commands, which prompted the shooting, Wadkins said. It wasn’t immediately clear how many officers fired. One of the two passengers struck by the car was hospitalized; it was unclear with what injuries. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting as is typical in shootings involving police officers.
