A woman was arrested for DUI in Athens, Georgia after backing into another vehicle in a parking lot on Baxter Street. The other driver called police and reported the collision. When an Athens-Clarke County officer arrived, the contact started as a routine crash report. It did not stay that way. The officer noted an odor of alcohol, slurred speech, bloodshot and watery eyes, and that the woman was leaning against her vehicle to stay steady. She declined all standardized field sobriety exercises. She denied drinking anything at all and said the symptoms came from her glaucoma medication which she had doubled up on that day ahead of an appointment. She told the officer she works for the Department of Veterans Affairs and had been on the job for 34 years. Minutes later she said 37 years. The officer told her plainly that he did not believe her, then walked through his reasoning. She was placed under arrest, read Georgia implied consent, refused the breath test, and agreed to a blood draw at Piedmont. Her vehicle was towed.
