It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On January 7, 2023, at about 8:57 PM, Patrolman Daniel Cooney from the Montville Township Police Department arrived at 620 Main Street. He pulled up in front of Santander Bank after a call about a woman stuck in a broken-down 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. As he got close to the car, he spotted damage on the front passenger tire. He talked to the driver, who turned out to be Kelly Terranova. While chatting with her, Cooney caught a whiff of alcohol. He also saw clear signs she might be impaired. Kelly paused when he asked for her papers. Sure she was driving drunk, he led her to the bank's parking lot. Patrolman Jared Piwowarski and Patrolman Thomas French showed up to help. Cooney had her try some field sobriety tests. He began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. In that one, he noted no smooth eye movement. There was jerking at the far side and starting before 45 degrees. Next came the Walk and Turn test. Kelly missed heel-to-toe touches. She turned the wrong way and forgot to count out loud. For the One Leg Stand, she couldn't do it right at all. With the alcohol smell, those failed tests, and her shaky performance, French arrested Kelly for driving under the influence. They held her car for 12 hours under John's Law. French first took her to the Lincoln Park Police Department to blow into a breathalyzer. There, they read her the standard statement for drivers. She said yes to giving breath samples. Patrolwoman Jennifer Hesse ran the machine. The results showed a blood alcohol level of 0.24 percent—three times over the 0.08 percent limit. Once the test ended, French drove Kelly back to the Montville Township station for more steps. They took her picture and filled out forms. When done, they let her go to her sister. She signed the liability warning for Kelly. Court would come later. French gave Kelly two tickets: one for operating under the influence, another for careless driving. Kelly faced another DWI arrest in Hanover Township, New Jersey, on March 3, 2023. Records show she got busted for DWI in Mansfield Township after fleeing an accident on April 14, 2019. Before that, two DWIs hit her in Rockaway Township on March 29 and March 27, 2019. Even earlier, a DWI arrest came in Hanover Township on March 1, 2010. On November 28, 2023, Kelly admitted guilt to operating under the influence. She had to install an ignition interlock for 24 months. Plus, 48 hours at a driver resource center. Fines added up to $1,390. The careless driving charge got dropped.
